The Southern Dwarves are a conquered race. Scattered and hidden they must flee the legions of Remus before they all become slaves.
An unlikely dwarf, known as Cobby, leads them to a place where they can live in peace. He discovers other downtrodden races along the way and recruits them to his mission. These include centaurs, s, satyrs, and more. There aren't enough of anyone to make a difference, but together they might stand a chance.
There are quite a few dwarf stories around, and I wanted to do something different with them. The setting is Greco Roman, and the times are brutal. This book contains violence, you have been warned.
It was fun trying to keep what readers expect from dwarves, and still add something different. Part Spartacus, part Exodus, I hope you will give The Cock of the South a chance.
The Cock of the South eBook C S Boyack
The Cock of the South combines history (well, an alternative history) and war, folklore and fable into one creative story centered around the black sheep of a prominent family who becomes a hero to the masses. A true epic fantasy, it will keep you turning the pages with fervor until the last word.Boyack created a world with fanciful characters—among them (but not limited to) dwarves, elves, goblins, satyrs, centaurs, and a very special cockatrice—that lived in a world where they had no trust for each other or the humans in the land. But in a time of war, one special being managed to unify when others would divide, to rise to victory when all others would have fallen. This hero’s tale was fast-paced and action-packed, but it was the characters who carried the plot. The main character, Cobby, is one you’ll never forget. He’s the perfect blend of gentle, wise, humble, and kind… with an endearing yet disastrous tendency to continuously get injured (which is a huge detriment in war). His character arc from slighted son to wartime king is a true delight to watch. The secondary characters he befriends are nearly as interesting and just as appealing.
The plot moves quickly, and the story culminates in an epic final battle—one in which great losses were prophesied. But the final outcome offered two great surprises. While I don’t want to spoil the ending, I will say it was poignant and clever and crafted with skill. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I read The Cock of the South in one day because I had to know what happened. I simply couldn’t put it down. If you like epic fantasies, you’ll love this story, too.

The Cock of the South eBook C S Boyack Reviews
With this book, author CS Boyack has proven two things;
He is a brilliant story-teller (I already knew this, having previously read ‘Panama’).
That writers can excel in more than just one genre.
By his own admission, ‘The Cock of the South’ is Boyack’s first foray into fantasy. Never one to be daunted, he has thrown himself wholeheartedly into the challenge and come up trumps with a whole new spin on what we accept as the norm for this genre.
This is not a story about good against evil, although such conflict does occur; it’s not about big battle scenes, although there are some (and exciting and detailed, they are too!); it’s not about weird and wonderful mythical creatures, although there are plenty; it’s not about doomed and unrequited love triangles, although there are romances; and it’s not about handsome musclebound heroes, although heroes do show up, albeit in the most unlikely packages.
Set in the Roman-Greco era, even this has a twist. Boyack is a master at turning everything on its head with that infamous ‘but what if’ question. Cobby is a southern dwarf brought up by humans to be totally unaware of his true heritage, although it is evident to everyone else. When disaster strikes, he sets out on a journey to find the truth. His fair-mindedness, ingenuity and cunning soon have peoples of all races flocking to him as their leader, leading him to a conclusion he could never have anticipated.
And here we come to the crux of the story. Although set in a historical context among mythical peoples, this story is a very current and human one; it is about equality, acceptance, belonging, self-reliance, independence, teamwork and hard graft. Without moralising, Cobby takes a group of displaced peoples of different races full of enmity and animosity towards each other, and melds them into one society which works together to achieve a common goal, namely, to find a safe place they can call home.
In doing so, Boyack shows he has done his homework. The dwarves have the secret of ‘black sand’… of course! So that is how they were able to carve out such wondrous underground cities. They also know how to build forges, make tools and weapons, brew alcohol, make cheese, blow glass… their list of skills is endless, and the author gives us just enough of an insight into these real ancient technologies to make it interesting, but not overwhelming.
All this is blended seamlessly with a plethora of mythological references to keep the fantasy fans happy. But the greatest strength in this story is the growth of Cobby himself, from someone much maligned and of little consequence in the world he grew up in, to respected and beloved leader, strategist, warrior, lover and king of the new world he has created.
If you are currently mourning the end of a certain movie about an adventurous band of dwarven misfits, and are wondering “What next?”, I advise you to look no further; ‘The Cock of the South’ is definitely the book for you.
Ran into this after following a link on a blog, bought it on a whim, not sure what to expect. Great, entertaining read, though! Highly recommend.
This was a surprisingly good book. Written almost like a fable and a constantly moving pace, C. S. Boyack's Greco-Roman fantasy was a very good read that I enjoyed. At first, I thought I might not like it then I was hooked and reading well into the night several times.
An enjoyable read combining mythology and fantasy complete with dwarves, cyclops, fairies, and humans. The characters and scenery were well described. The plot kept moving forward encouraging me to keep turning the pages. A great ending to a wonderful story.
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed "Panama" by this author, I was anticipating another well-written and in-depth story. I wasn't disappointed, although the writing style of "The Cock of the South" was much different. It's a mix of fantasy and mythology in a world where Remus killed Romulus, and Remsians, rather than Romans rule the world. Cobby, brought up among the Remsians, doesn't realize he's actually a dwarf. Little by little this gentle being, who gives everyone a chance to prove themselves, is forced to into a role of leadership. The book is entertaining, humorous, and exciting, with epic battles fantasy fans look forward to. But it also sends a clear message about biases and bigotry learned from our upbringing, and how we should all be able to get along. Pick up a copy and travel along with Cobby as he goes from an overlooked nobody to a respected leader.
